World Picture News is preparing to more than double the size of its operation in the coming months. The New York-based news agency currently employs a staff of 12. Ten more hires are expected to be in place by the middle of August, and the agency expects to have a total of 30 employees hired by September.
Since its inception in September 2001, the agency has focused primarily on photojournalism news and features. The agency's expansion plans include offering a wider selection of imagery, including entertainment and stock, as well as strategic partnerships.
Husband-and-wife co-founders Seamus Conlan and Tara Farrell launched World Picture News on Sept. 9, 2001. Conlan, himself a photographer, says his agency's success lies in its personal touch with photographers and clients.

In het NRC Handelsblad schrijft Frank Kuitenbrouwer vandaag over de auteursrechtelijke bescherming van beeldbepalende openbare objecten, onder de titel Natuurlijk moet je betalen voor Erasmusbrug.
Een citaat:
Hoe prominent mag de Erasmusbrug aanwezig zijn op een krantenfoto van het kroonprinselijk paar tijdens een rondvaart over de Maas? Dat de bouwtekeningen beschermd moeten zijn is duidelijk, maar minder vanzelfsprekend is dat dit geldt voor het aanzien van zo'n met gemeenschapsgeld gebouwd symbool van een stad. Canada categorically rejected Iran's latest explanation of the death in custody of a Canadian-Iranian photographer, deepening a diplomatic rift over the affair.
The Iranian judiciary said four days after a security agent was acquitted of her murder, that Zahra Kazemi had been on a hunger strike after her arrest last year and had fallen down due to her weakened state. "This theory has absolutely no credibility," Canadian Foreign Ministry spokesman Reynald Doiron, told Quebec's RDI television channel.
In a showdown with the judiciary, Iran's reformist government earlier concluded the 54-year-old photographer died in July 2003 from a brain haemorrhage caused by a blow to her skull after her arrest for taking photos outside a prison.
Nobel prize winning lawyer Shirin Ebadi, who is representing Kazemi's family in the case, has rejected the judiciary's thesis, and the photographer's son has accused Canada's government of not doing enough to secure justice in the case.
On Saturday, an intelligence agent accused of dealing the fatal blow to Kazemi, 42-year-old Mohammad Reza Aghdam Ahmadi, was acquitted. He had insisted he was a scapegoat.
The judiciary said, given that verdict, there was only one explanation for Kazemi's death. "This is that the incident leading to the death of the late Kazemi was because of a drop in her blood sugar level caused by her hunger strike, thus making her fall from a standing position and get hurt," it said.
In a furious response, Ebadi and her team of lawyers renewed charges of a top-level cover-up and urged the head of the judiciary to allow an independent probe. "There is concrete proof... showing a high-ranking official in Evin prison gave Zahra Kazemi a very strong punch to the left side of her head, breaking her skull," a statement from Ebadi and her team said. "What we want to know is why some people want to cover it up."

Singer Justin Timberlake won a court order forcing a celebrity photographer to keep his distance. A judge in Santa Monica, California ordered Artemus Earl Lister to stay away from the former 'N Sync singer.
Timberlake alleged on July 7 that Lister was stalking him. He also sued the London tabloid "News of the World" for publishing what Timberlake said was false information, that he had cheated on his girlfriend, Cameron Diaz, with British model Lucy Clarkson.
"Justin never met the woman in question, and we are confident a lot of money will be won for a wonderful charity when we win this case," his publicist Sunshine said.
The tabloid stands by its story.

Fotomanifestatie Noorderlicht richt zich dit jaar op het meest besproken
gebied van dit moment. Onder de titel NAZAR - Arabisch voor zien, inzicht,
overdenken - wordt in een fotografisch drieluik de Arabische wereld getoond
van nu en vroeger, gezien door Arabische en westerse ogen. NAZAR is te zien
op drie locaties in Leeuwarden.
Het westerse beeld van de Arabische wereld - 22 landen groot - wordt
gedomineerd door de gewelddadige actualiteit: de oorlog in Irak,
terroristische aanslagen, de strijd tussen Israël en de Palestijnen, de
confrontaties tussen modernisten en moslimfundamentalisten.
In NAZAR wordt dit dagelijks door het nieuws gevoede beeld genuanceerd door
meer dan vijftig fotografen van zowel Arabische als westerse komaf. In ruim

Iran today offered to help identify the killer of an Iranian-Canadian photojournalist after the man accused of her murder was acquitted, in a case that has damaged relations between Ottawa and Tehran.
"The intelligence ministry is prepared to identify the person behind the semi-premeditated murder of Zahra Kazemi, provided the judiciary allows it to do so," government spokesman Abdollah Ramezanzadeh said.

Afgelopen week werd de Erasmusbrug veelvuldig gefotografeerd, als achtergrond van het reusachtige cruiseschip Queen Mary 2.
Wie foto's van de Erasmusbrug publiceert, moet wel even opletten. Op de brug rust auteursrecht. Architect Ben van Berkel wil niet dat iedereen zomaar zijn brug afbeeldt. Hij laat Stichting Beeldrecht in de gaten houden of fotojournalisten het bouwwerk fotograferen. De stichting Beeldrecht verzet zich tegen het beeld dat de architect een geldwolf is: "Het gaat er juist om dat anderen geld aan de brug verdienen."
De auteurswet schrijft voor dat uitsluitend de kunstenaar zijn werk openbaar mag maken of reproduceren. Dat betekent niet dat de architect alles kan tegenhouden, want er bestaat ook nog zoiets als citaatrecht. Als een foto dient ter ondersteuning van een artikel, geldt het beeldrecht niet. Er hoeft evenmin worden betaald als de brug niet het hoofdbeeld van de opname is.
Maar zelfs een fotojournalist mag de brug niet prominent in beeld zetten, want dan valt een acceptgiro van de Stichting Beeldrecht in de bus. Het is te gek voor woorden.

Van 29 juli tot en met 1 augustus is in FOAM (Amsterdam) een tentoonstelling te zien van 15 jaar fotografie uit het archief van de Nederlandse editie van het tijdschrift Elle. Dit ter gelegenheid van de eerste Amsterdam International Fashion Week.

De politie heeft de klacht gegrond verklaard die de NVJ eind 2003 indiende nadat de politie in Maarssen een persfotograaf bij een tankerincident verhinderd had te fotograferen.
"Uit niets is gebleken dat de fotojournalist op afstand moest worden gehouden in verband met een mogelijke gevaarszetting. De aanwezigheid van de fotojournalist leverde geen problemen op bij de uitvoering van werkzaamheden van de politie", deelt de politie mee.
De districtschef zal de spelregels nog eens aan de orde brengen om herhaling te voorkomen.
